Before any misunderstandings occur, let us clarify exactly what this list is about. This will be a list of our top ten picks for cosplay ideas from Anime which you probably have never heard of, anime which are not very popular, and anime that are mostly unknown. We will also include heavily underrated anime, anime that aren’t that popular, and hidden gems, This list will also include characters that are seldom seen and have almost never been done. The characters may not be all that popular nor famous but are absolute masterpieces. Regardless, if these ideas are taken up, they will make for some rare and unique cosplays ideas.
The limited fans who recognize your work will be the best part of the experience. Even if not many recognize the character, there will always be plenty to appreciate the beauty of your work. The cosplays may range from easy to difficult depending on the character and the level of accuracy desired. But remember: never let things like race, gender, nationality, body type and skin color get in your way! Cosplay is an art expressing freedom and creativity.
There are a few cosplayers who have created some of the characters below, but they just aren’t seen often enough. It’s such a shame considering what great cosplays they could end up being! So without further chit-chat, here we go~
Foster Isaac (Angels of Death)
“Satsuriku no Tenshi” is just not that popular as an anime, despite being a decent to good series. Regardless, one character from this series is seen in memes, quotes, and posts every now and then. Thus, Foster Isaac is probably more popular than the anime he hails from and would make for a great cosplay! It is a simple cosplay; with the purchasable set, the only things you need to secure are a scythe (purchasable/craftable), black boots, a shaggy black wig (your own hair can do too), some bandages and dark makeup. Then you’re all set to herald death at any occasion!
Decim and Chiyuki (Death Parade)
Death Parade is an underrated gem with some very deep themes. Even so, we don’t see enough cosplays from this series. The characters are very classy and make for cool cosplays too. This is a pair cosplay idea, but it can be done individually too. Decim and Chiyuki are integral parts of the series. With the below cosplay sets, you can pull off an extremely classy cosplay. For Decim, you need to secure black shoes, a wig and light blue contacts. For Chiyuki, you need to find yourself a black wig, a silver bracelet, a necklace and some black heels. You’re all set to question the concept of death itself!
Dandy (Space Dandy)
Space Dandy is a hidden gem anime and Dandy himself is the shining star! A cosplay not seen often enough, it is a tribute to Elvis Presley himself. Armed with the above cosplay set, you too can become the cool intergalactic space hunter. Just get yourself brown boots, a belt with a gold buckle, a chain necklace and a wig to represent his characteristic hair. The rest are easily purchasable online. All that’s left is to master his attitude to make for a perfect cosplay!
Nice (Hamatora)
Now, it’s difficult to find a purchasable cosplay set for Nice online. But don’t worry, it is simple enough to put together yourself. Hamatora is an underrated gem of an anime as well and Nice is the protagonist. To pull off his vibrant look, simply secure yourself a brown shaggy wig, some white band aids, neon yellow headphones (optional), a blue long-sleeve T-shirt, a white belt, brown pants, pink sneakers, a wristwatch, and his characteristic sleeveless overcoat. If possible, top it all off with blue contacts and you’re set! Most of these items are already in your household or can be bought at a thrift shop, so get to it.
Hazama Masayoshi (Samurai Flamenco)
Hazama is one of the main characters of Samurai Flamenco, another underrated anime. He has around three characteristic red attires and you can take your pick! Bodysuits are the way to go with Flamenco. All you need for the base is a red full-bodysuit. The belt, helmet, red/white sash, goggles, white gloves, footwear, minor accessories and small weapons are easily craftable or can be bought at a local store. With some tinkering, nobody can tell the difference!
Kusuriuri (Mononoke)
Mononoke itself is decently famous but we don’t see enough cosplay from it. Kusuriuri steals the show with his characteristic look and personality. With this cosplay set, all you need is a purple bandana, a bead necklace, attachable elf ears, a blue hairband, a gold pendant, black pants, black socks, some bandages, wooden slippers, his characteristic pipe (optional) and makeup. Not all of these are necessarily either, substituting most of these pieces are easy enough and you can find most of these at home.
Yoko Nakajima (The 12 Kingdoms)

This is a pretty easy cosplay from an underrated anime. Yoko has a bunch of outfits and all of them are doable. Here we will be thinking about her good ol’ sailor uniform look. This is a comfy pick for many people and can be done on a budget. All you need is a pair of grey school shoes, white socks, frilled grey short skirt, grey long-sleeve sailor uniform top, light grey ribbon and long red wig. Any and all tinkering will be on the sailor uniform top to get the characteristic look. Don’t hesitate to take a prop sword with you!
Enma Ai (Hell Girl)
Hell Girl is an underrated anime that can make for some eerie but beautiful cosplays. Enma Ai has two signature looks: a black uniform and a black kimono. Both are purchasable and doable, accompanied with a hime-style long black wig and red contacts. For the uniform, secure yourself some black knee-length socks, brown school shoes, and a brown bead bracelet. For the kimono, secure yourself some white socks, black slippers and the brown bead bracelet. Simple enough but it will leave a lasting impression!
Menma (AnoHana)
AnoHana is quite popular but we don’t see many cosplays from it. Most of the characters wear everyday-casual clothes, so there’s no unique look associated with them. This can’t be said for Menma though, her classic lolita look is unforgettable. This dress is purchasable, all you need to complete it are light blue contacts and a long light grey wig. Don’t forget, you have to go barefoot!
Mayer Re-l (Ergo Proxy)
Ergo Proxy is one of the best-underrated anime out there. So a cosplay from it will catch attention and give it more exposure. Mayer Re-I is the epitome of badass. You can either purchase the main outfit or make it yourself. You need the characteristic black wig, pale bodysuit, black shirt, mini tie, dark boots, long black coat, dark stockings, black belt and the right makeup. Feel free to grab a prop pistol/gun to finish the look!
