Its been a while since Avatar The Last Airbender Made its debut on
television. Specifically, 14 years to be exact. But no matter how
much time has passed it seems this show keeps making its way
back into the cosplay scene. I see it at nearly every convention I go
to. I also see advertisements for it all the time but that may just
because Google and Facebook track my search history. Anyways,
Ang, Zuko, Katara, Toph and Sokka seemed to creep their way
into our hearts and after three seasons were just gone.
RIP #gonebutnotforgotten. There was something mesmerizing
about Avatar the Last Airbender. Maybe it was General Irohs
wisdom or Zuko’s path of redemption that drew us in? Or even Ang
and Kataras innocent love story? I can’t say for sure but I can tell
you that it all blended together effortlessly and created one of the
best series Nickelodeon has ever seen. Despite the show being gone
for many years, we can still honor it with a bit of cosplay, right? In
this post, we look at the best cosplays from Avatar the Last
Airbender.
Ang
First up under the review microscope is none other than the Last
Airbender himself. That’s right, Ang. Despite his many
shortcomings, he eventually aspired to the avatar that we all
wanted him to become. He conquered each element and gradually
grew his understanding of not only this world but also the spiritual
world. Fortunately, most of the characters from this series wore
relatively simple clothing which will not cost you an arm and leg to
purchase. On the downside or bright side considering how you see
things, these costumes are custom made and will take some time to
be delivered.
Cosplaying as Ang will only set you back about $56 dollars. This is
a very good deal considering your cosplaying as an absolute legend
in the cartoon/anime world. To add the old razzle-dazzle to this
cosplay, go ahead and snag yourself a stuffed momo and plush
appa. For all you true Avatar the Last Airbender fans, I was unable
to find his glider but I did find his Staff and Boots. His staff and
costume will together run you about $106 bucks. Not bad at all and
definitely an awesome addition to the cosplay wardrobe.
Zuko
Zuko was Angs adversary for much of the series due to a lying and
terrible father. That’s neither here nor there though. Zuko always
struggled with his place in the world and was constantly trying to
figure out what his exact goal and purpose were. Eventually, he
chased the Avatar for so long he began to open his eyes to whom
the true enemy was. Well, this accompanied by a bit of coaching
from his grandfather, General Iroh, Aka the dragon of the west.
Zuko struggled most of the series with not only his life goals but
also controlling the upgraded version of fire bending, lightning
bending. He unlike his golden child sister (Azula) was the outcast
of the family. I’m sure I’m not the only one that can relate to not
living up to your families expectations so this character definitely
resonates with me. Possibly also because im a fire sign. But
anyways cosplaying as Zuko will only cost you about $75 bucks.
Mix in his boots and you have a grand total of $130 dollars. Also
another Budget cosplay.
Toph Beifong
This character along with Zuko are tied for my first place favorite
characters. Why you ask? Glad you did. Its because not only does
Toph not take any crap from anyone, she’s sassy and extremely
powerful. So she can put her money where her mouth is. Not to
mention, she’s the only character in the series that I can recall has
a disability. But it’s her disability that makes her extremely strong.
She’s able to sense the world around her through vibrations. She
does it so well the rest of the cast commonly forgets she’s blind.
Toph is an earth bender and luckily has two cosplays available for
her. Toph also invented the metal bending style which is greatly
expanded upon in Avatar Korra. I personally think this may be the
second strongest of the elements simply because the ability to
manipulate metal gives her free range over nearly any weapon. But
I digress, her classic outfit along with her wedding dress outfit.
Either are great and I am always happy to photograph either of
these.
Katara
Katara plays a very interesting role in the series. She can be both
kind and compassionate while also ruthless. She is a great friend
and eventual lover to Ang while also proving to be extremely
useful throughout the series with her healing, water bending and
blood bending abilities. That’s right you heard me blood bending.
This is the skill that I consider the strongest throughout the series.
It literally gives you the ability to control your opponent’s
movements. The possibilities of this are endless and I wish they
would have been expanded upon a bit.
Cosplaying as Katara is relatively simple and will only cost you
about $45 dollars. Similarly to Toph, Katara has two available
outfits to choose from. First up is her classic water tribe outfit.
This is the outfit she wears throughout most of the series and will
be the most iconic. Her second outfit she only whore for her time
in the fire nation. Coincidently, she also wore this outfit during one
of the greatest scenes in the movie, the Ang and Katara Dance
scene. This was a legendary scene that you need to check out if you
haven’t seen it. In total, her outfit will only cost you about $80 to
pull off.
Sokka
Next up we have Kataras brother Sokka. Sokka is the only one in
the group that is unable to bend any of the elements. But he
doesn’t let this hold him back from being the group’s jester and
eventual sword master. Also being born in the Southern water
tribe, Sokka is very familiar with the customs of water benders
and never grows envious of his sister’s abilities. He promotes
everyone in the group and usually has some great ideas or plans
for the gang to initiate.
If you want to cosplay as Sokka, you’re going to have to make a few
decisions. Sokka has three costumes available for you to choose
from. We have already discussed his classic outfit so now we can
move onto his second classic cosplay or as I call it wolf man lol. He
wore this outfit with a wolf-shaped helmet that made him look like
a complete badass. Last, we have his Sword Master costume. He
whore this outfit when he trained in the fire nation and when he
created his Space Sword. The prices for these costumes vary
considerably so you will have to choose which is best for you and
your budget.
Iroh
Ok, now we are getting somewhere. General Iroh is like the Mr
. Miyagi of the series. He gives amazing advice to his nephew Zuko.
He’s also an absolute powerhouse and is a senior citizen you DO
NOT want to piss off. As I stated before he is known as the Dragon
of the west. Oddly enough, this title actually has a matching
costume. I’m telling you, this guy is amazing, and they should
make a spinoff of just him. RIP General Iroh.
General Irohs cosplay is one of my favorite cosplays because it
just flows and looks so classy. It is great for us older cosplayers with
a few extra pounds. This cosplay will only set you back about $65
dollars and will definitely gain my attention at conventions if not
other photographers. I’ve always wanted to do a photoshoot with
him spitting fire rather than photoshopping it in. Nothing like
creating the effect in real life.
Azula
Last but not least we have Zuko’s prodigy sister, Azula. She
literally excels at everything that Zuko struggles with. Fire
bending, lighting bending, leading you name it and odds are Azula
is better at it. I honestly believe it was her own arrogance and lack
of self-control that caused Azula’sdemise. Well, that and a bit of
pen magic from the creators. Eventually, Azulais betrayed by her
crew ultimately showing she is both a terrible friend and leader.
Interesting fact, Azulas fire burns blue instead of red/orange in
order to demonstrate her mastery over both fire bending and
lightening bending. She is also the only woman in the series
demonstrating the capabilities of lightning bending. Definitely a
feat worthy of noting. Her cosplay costume is gorgeous and
actually relatively inexpensive. Her costume and boots will only
cost you about $137 dollars. Mix in some 3d printed headpieces for
added detail and you’re good to go.
Bonus Kyoshi Warriors
You know I couldn’t end this article without throwing in the Kyoshi
Warriors. These warriors were actually named after Avatar
Kyoshi. She established the order to protect her homeland and
oddly enough it was composed of all females. Each of them had a
very unique fighting style separate from the other. This is a great
cosplay to go with if you’re going to the con in a group. I believe
the outfits are gorgeous and with a bit of Photoshop magic will pair
nicely with a bamboo forest or castle background.
To add to this cosplay grab yourself a set of fans and swords to
complement the armor. I have only seen a handful of these
characters at a convention so you definitely wont fall into the
crowd with everyone else. As a photographer, its nice to see some
new cosplays. Not saying the common ones are not great, but you
can get tired of seeing the same costume over and over.
I hope you enjoyed my look at Avatar the Last Airbender cosplays.
Hopefully, some of you will actually grab a few of these cosplays
and implement them into your net con lineup. If you do, definitely
feel free to message me as I would love to not only see it but grab
some pics of it. Who knows, you may make it onto the front page of
the website 😉. Well, that’s going to be everything for today. Let me
know if I left anything out or if you would like a continuation of
this article in the form of Avatar Korra. Until next time, stay
BOUNDLESS!!!
