So I have always thought about this but never really wrote about it until now. I was pondering over a few things I had heard throughout the anime universe and began to think of how profound along with badass some of them were. Some of these quotes were not created by the likes of someone simply working a 9 to 5. They really sat down and dug deep for a few of these. Many of these quotes, in my opinion, deserve to be up there with some of the best in our philosophical history, while others are completely comical. Let’s take a look at some of the most badass quotes ever uttered by anime characters!
Zabuza Momochi
First up we have an absolute legend that was known by nearly everyone throughout the ninja world. Zabuza Momochi was nicknamed the demon of the mist for good reason. He stated “When you’ve hovered between life and death so many times that it doesn’t phase you, you may be called a ninja. When you’ve become so deadly that your profile has been entered into my bingo book, then you may have earned the title ninja.” To speak such words shows the man has no regrets about anything he has done. He has danced with lady death so many times he’s grown bored with the melody. Imagine tracking someone down and believe you have them cornered only to hear this quote. You may rethink your entire strategy.
Matsumoto Rangiku
Matsumoto Rangiku is known for several things but I doubt many pegged her for being a philosopher. I cant remember the episode but she stated “To know sorrow is not terrifying. What is terrifying is to know you can’t go back to happiness you could have.” In my opinion, this quote is something that everyone on this planet can relate to. This is apparent by the use of idioms such as “The golden or glory days”. Time passes us by so fast that we never notice the best days are sometimes composed of our current situations. Great times at conventions with friends or the endless game-a-thons when you were a kid will unfortunately never return. Other great things will come but this exact form of happiness made up of this moment in time will never return.
Don Quixote Doflamingo
Don Quixote was a mixed antagonist for me because although he did some terrible things, he had a tough upbringing and was deeply devoted to his friends. Many that do not watch anime or read manga think of it as being childish or a complete waste of time. But tell me, do kid shows make statements such as these? “Those who stand at the top determine what’s wrong and what’s right! This very place is neutral ground! Justice will prevail, you say? But of course, it will! Whoever wins this war becomes justice!” This quote could not be more true. History never tells the story of the losing side. Sure it may paint a few negative aspects of the winning team but it’s usually justified in textbooks in some manner. Whether you agree with the outcome of a war or political election, there words and ideas become law that everyone within their domain has to follow. Justice is determined by the ruling party and its not until years after their rain has ended that individuals begin to reflect on what occurred and think of some of their actions as unjust.
Shintaro Midorima
Maybe not the most profound quote ever uttered but I’m sure it’s one most of us have heard before. “Don’t give up, there’s no shame in falling down! True shame is to not stand up again” was stated by Shintaro Midorima! I know at times this one can be easy for others to state especially if they aren’t walking in your shoes. Nevertheless, that does not make it any less true. Life knocks us all down constantly. Sometimes you literally get knocked down before you have gotten out of bed. You read a terrible text or email and the urge to proceed with the day is instantly taken from you. The only way to make life any better is to get up and do something about it. Maybe you can’t change what happened or what will happen but if you stand up again you can certainly shape the future for better.
Kaneki Ken
Last but not least we have a quote by Kaneki Ken. So much can be said about this statement. “Never trust anyone too much, remember the devil was once an angel.” Such a simple yet elegant quote that relates to everyday friendships. We all know that everyone was not put in our lives to be permanent nor bring us joy. Some people start as the best thing ever and are a nice breath of fresh air. But the situation can quickly dissolve into one that was far worst than you ever imagined. Of course, walling yourself off from others would be a bit much but make sure you thoroughly evaluate others’ roles in your life as that angel may be a devil in disguise.
There are so many other quotes that were not included in this brief list that have moved me or altered my thought process in several ways. But I doubt anyone wants to look at a 100 quote post this afternoon. I really enjoyed writing this and will certainly be revisiting this topic in the future.
