Everyones cosplay story starts differently. Some may be veterans in the game while others are just starting. Either way, each has a unique and original back story. Whether you got into cosplay as a result of going to conventions or simply picked up the idea after seeing some images online, we all desire to improve our cosplay skills and abilities. But, how can you improve your abilities? Of course, you could simply take the trial and error method but this is rather expensive. Why not take some advice from veterans and learn through there mistakes. That’s right I’m talking about cosplay tutorials.
YouTube is chocked full of cosplay tutorials. Some are obviously better than others and I would like to try and point you in the direction of some amazing cosplay tutorials. Everything from working with EVA Foam and Worbla to sewing. And of course, let’s not forget our awesome lights and electronic tutorials. All are useful in the cosplay building process and these videos will hopefully make learning the art of cosplay creation much easier. With this statement in mind, let’s check out some awesome beginner cosplay tutorials.
How To Start Cosplaying
Ok, so you decided you’re going to dive into the world of cosplay and you ready to get your feet wet but how does one do that exactly? Do I just pick a character and go from there. Well basically yes. This video from Becoming Tia explains that you need to pick a character you love, research that character and google some poses. There are obviously many other steps that go into creating and choosing a character so check out these videos to fill in the missing pieces of the cosplay selection process.
Eva Foam
Of course second on the list we have none other than the amazing Kamuicosplay Eva Foam Tutorial. Her Nergigante and Zinogre armor are absolutely ridiculous and look damn near impossible to build. But with some of these guides and of course even her Costume Making Guide you are sure to figure out the details of such amazing builds in no time. These tutorials discuss things such as the Glue, Paint, materials, and primers used in these awesome armor builds. Definitely check it out if you found these armors amazing and are curious about beginning your own armor build.
Cosplay Sewing
Ill admit I do not know the first thing about sewing but this VIDEO is a great place to start. I always just assumed that you needed a sewing machine to begin sewing for cosplay and somehow completely forget about the fact that you can hand sew. As mentioned in the videos, this is a great place to start if you do not have a sewing machine or if you are intimidated by them. The video also discusses things like fabrics and learning your sewing machine. I never knew there were so many parts and things to consider when using a sewing machine so definitely invest in this video if you are just as new to sewing as I am.
Dealing with Creeps at Conventions
This is an unfortunate event that occurs at tons of cons and really needs to be addressed. So many cosplayers have to deal with well, awkward and creepy individuals that do not know boundaries. They try to touch you without your permission or yell obscene and unwarranted comments. This video discusses what to do in the event of several different scenarios occurring. Situations such as someone taking a picture of you without your permission or individuals following you back to your hotel or car. A lot of situations require getting security involved to hopefully rectify the situation. Definitely check this one out because unfortunately, you may be placed in one of these situations someday.
Tools For Cosplay Creation
I recently wrote a post about this that can be found HERE, but its always nice to have the information presented in video format from one of the best cosplayers out there. The cosplay creation process is rather extensive so obviously the tools needed are also gonna be rather extensive. Things such as Heat Guns and Dremels are all used in this process and each one has a certain learning curve. But don’t let this intimidate you and the earlier you start the better. This video is great for describing the items you need and are accompanied by videos where kamuicosplay actually uses them. Check it out!
What to Expect From Conventions
Another great video from Becoming Tia about what to expect at conventions. Conventions can be extremely overwhelming, especially if your first convention is one like dragoncon or NYCcomicon. These conventions have thousands of visiting individuals and incorporate numerous areas that may be a bit difficult to navigate. But don’t worry, you will be navigating conventions in no time with a bit of experience. She also states to expect amazing cosplays, vendors and panels. In particular, panels can be very informative and range from everything such as cosplay photography to anime music videos. There are literally panels about everything in the cosplay and anime world so go ahead and check out some awesome panels at your first convention.
Cosplay Electronics
Ever seen cosplays that glow, emit smoke or even transform. Well, they started from scratch also and have gone through lots of trials and errors to figure out the exact steps needed to achieve their cosplay goals. Lights and smoke can greatly enhance one’s cosplay and look absolutely amazing when instituted correctly. But if you don’t know where to begin feel free to check out this Tutorial. It can definitely shine some light on the materials you need along with how you power each item. You can start with simply attaching Leds directly to a battery or begin using switches so the led will not always be on. I highly recommend this video if you are completely new to cosplay electronics.
Cosplay Shopping
So congratulations, you finally decided on that amazing cosplay you want to create but you have no idea where, to begin with the required items. Don’t worry we all have been there. This awesome video by Zonbis Workshop discusses just how to go about grabbing all the items you need. She states you need to first start by creating a list and writing down all of the stores you will have to attend to grab each item. But the most important step may be snagging coupons. We all know saving money is of the utmost importance so definitely look into these before heading out. The video gives several other amazing tips so watch it ASAP.
Cosplay Mistakes
There are many mistakes that can be made in the cosplay world and sooner or later some are just going to happen. But, hopefully, you can prevent others by listening to some mistakes that other cosplayers have made. Definitely chat with your friends and experienced cosplayers to learn about what to not do during the cosplay creation process. But in the meantime, check out this Video on some cosplay mistakes. Hopefully, it will save you both time and money. Cause we all know cosplay isn’t cheap and mistakes are costly.
Cosplay Level Up
