The Cherry Blossom tree is a gorgeous member of the rose family commonly blooming in spring. Believed to originate from the Himalayas, these trees display a gorgeous pink floral bloom in early spring. Several of these trees were given to the United States by Japan to honor their lasting friendship. Specifically, 3,000 cherry blossoms were given to the United States and are on display throughout our country’s capital. Visiting this festival was a first for me. All of the rumors and anticipation surrounding the event caused me to develop extremely high expectations. Fortunately, the event did not disappoint.

The rows of trees provided spectacular blooms of whites gradually fading into pink. Several of the petals would slowly flutter through the air as the wind gradually became stronger. These aerial displays were great for photo-shoots and provided a refreshing distraction from the large crowds. Blooms stretched from the Washington monument to the Thomas Jefferson Memorial. With each step, the festival’s beauty becomes more pronounced. As the day faded to night, the city lights illuminated the already spectacular flowers creating a nearly mystical effect. This effect was further enhanced by the illuminated monuments creating the perfect background for night photography.

Recommending this festival is a no brainer. Although the large amount of visitors made the best sites to view the trees difficult to reach, the view presented once reaching these spots was well worth the wait. The beauty of this festival is difficult to describe. Each trees aroma accents the next eventually creating a naturally sweet fragrance. I have visited several festivals and this one was certainly like no other. The sites, sounds, smells and natural history that DC has to offer will undoubtedly create a desire to return each year. The festival runs from March 20th-April 17th. Make sure you arrive early and stay late to enjoy all the events has to offer.
