This year has been a great one for cosplaying and photography. I went to a decent amount of conventions and captured literally thousands of pictures. Although all of the conventions were hear on the east coast, I had a blast and got to meet tons of new people along with old friends. Since my con life is done for the year, I figured I would go ahead and talk about one of my favorite things. What is that you ask? Great question. If you have seen any of my other posts then you will know that I love classic cosplays. Basically, anything from the early 2000s to the late 90s falls into this category.
Actually, there are of course exceptions to this rule but I kind of just use it as a guideline. Any shows that I watched more than a few years ago I now consider classic cosplays. This title can actually be awarded to video games and basically anything nerdy as well. So, with today’s post I want to pay tribute to some of the best classic cosplays I captured in 2019. Buckle in because you are in for a ride down memory lane.
Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy Cosplay
After looking through the cosplay vaults, I stumbled upon some amazing images that I forgot about. First up is this Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy Cosplay. I remember watching batman the animated series in the early and mid-90s and photographing these two cosplayers brings back a lot of memories. Everything about life was a lot simpler back then. Mostly because I did not have to pay for bills, I assume. Man, can we bring those days back. I took these pictures at Queen City Anime Convention and look forward to what it has to offer next year.
Grimmjow
When this character hit the scene, he was not only highly anticipated but absolutely loved. I believe this was due not only to his overall appearance being so great but also his I don’t care about anything attitude. Grimmjow made his first appearance I believe in episode 116 of bleach. At the time we did not know what he was truly capable of but would soon find out as Ichigo and Grimmjow constantly faced off against one another. I’m sure this relationship was greatly amplified in the manga as regrettably I never got to read it!
Sailor Moon
If you’re like me and you love classic anime then you likely have seen Sailor Moon. This series along with Dragonball z defined my middle school years. Though I never tried to transform or fight evil by moonlight with friends, I did follow the series for several years. Despite sailor moon being the main character, I always enjoyed Sailor Mars a bit more. Maybe its because fire at the time was my favorite element. Sigh, she never got the screen time she deserved.
Lil Mac and Doc
Im really showing my age with this one as I’m sure most of you have never played this game. It wasn’t until my cousins came to me asking who the new boxing character was in super smash brother that I understood time had really forgotten Little Mac. Punch-Out debuted in 1997 with the game’s main character being none other than Little Mac. Some people look at rocky as being the true underdog story. Well even though it was released earlier, I still know that the title of champ lies with Little Mac. They need to turn this series into a movie. I’d certainly watch it just out of respect #respecttheclassics.
Leeloo
I don’t care what year you were born. If you have not seen the 5th Element than one you should be ashamed of yourself and two, go watch it immediately. LOL just kidding but seriously go watch it. Despite the moving debuting in 1997 I still remember the phrase “MULTIPASS” as though it was just uttered yesterday. There have been so many memes generated from this movie that you are really doing you’re meme knowledge a disservice if you do not see this movie. I will always make time to shoot a Leeloo at a convention as the world needs more Leeloo.
Rurouni Kenshin
I was actually introduced to this anime by a friend before I even knew what anime was. He told me to sit down and check out this awesome cartoon with these crazy swordsmen. Now 10 or so years later, Rurouni Kenshin has forever been etched in my mind as one of the greatest swordsmen to ever grace the manga and anime universe. His final fight vs Sojiro Seta was magical and a must for anyone that’s a fan of swordsmanship and violent anime.
Macho Man Randy Savage

Does this character really need an introduction? Macho Man Randy Savage was for a long time the definition of a man. Everything he did just reeked of greatness. I mean how can you dislike someone who comes up with quotes such as “Too hot to handle, too cold to hold!” Or my personal favorite “I’m the Tower of Power, To sweet to be sour”. Though I feel “snap into a slim Jim” deserves a position on this list. Hell at least a mention.
Legend Of Dragoon
I was so shocked when I saw this cosplay at AWA 2019. Never have I seen these characters cosplayed at a convention. I felt this game was completely dwarfed by Final Fantasy 7 and never gets the credit it deserves. But, just when I was about to give up hope, some cosplayers went and did the unthinkable. They cosplayed as the legendary ,Rose, LLoyd and Meru. As I slowly walked up to them to ask for a picture, I couldn’t help but think of how Jeff Goldblum felt in Jurassic Park. “you did it, you crazy bastard you actually did it”.
Jorgen von strangle
Jorgen Von Strangle was basically the fairy equivalent of Arnold Schwarzenegger. He was always showing up to ruin Timmy Turners Life. His enormous wand and camouflaged pants were extremely iconic. So much so that whenever I see anyone with them on at conventions, I just assume they’re gearing up for a Jorgen Von Strangle cosplay. I really want to see a group cosplay as the entire cast. No wait even better would be someone cosplaying as Chip Skylark blaring “My shiny Teeth and me” being chased by a ton of groupies. Make this happen in 2020 people, PLEASE!
Seto Kaiba
To this day I still keep a Blue Eyes White Dragon on me in case things heat up during an Uno match. You can never be to prepared as Uno is a game that breaks apart families. Seto Kaiba was the original Yugio badass. He faced the full might of Exodia and lived to tell the tale. Though it did have tons of psychological side effects he can still say he walked away from this ordeal. I’m still waiting for the day that card games are actually played in this manner. Screw hoverboards, I want holographic generators creating giant monsters that do my bidding.
I could go on and on about the amazing classic cosplays I saw this year but for now, I will just limit it to 10. Thanks so much, everyone for making this a great year. I can’t wait to see what new cosplays you have planned for 2020. Just make sure you occasionally mix in a bit of the classics when you’re creating that My Hero Academia Cosplay.
