Interview With A Cosplay Featuring Talynnkel

How’s everyone doing? It’s the start of a new week meaning its time for a new cosplay interview. Today we have the amazing Talynnkel with us. She’s a cosplayer out of Atlanta and has tons of experience and knowledge related to the cosplay world and becoming a guest at conventions. She took the time to speak with us about these topics along with several others. Let’s see what she had to say.

We begin by talking about being self-critical. Often times we are way to analytical of our own work. We sit back and think “this is terrible or I wish it would have looked like this”. Its only natural to want to show your best work to the public but sometimes we have achieved our best without knowing it. Works that may appear mundane to you are absolutely phenomenal to others. They are astounded at the cosplays you create and wish for just a small fraction of your creativity.

Talynnkel speaks about a blade cosplay she created. It was not one of her most elaborate or time consuming cosplays but it received tons of positive feedback and attention. She states that people still request this cosplay and a lot of the items used in its creation were not hers. She has since changed elements of it and modified it to make it hers. You may be wondering how she funds her amazing cosplays and what she does outside of cosplay.

Well, she’s actually a writer. This makes sense given the fact that she has written two books which can be found HERE.  The books actually began as a series of stories and eventually grew into the books. Definitely check them out and show some support. They are great reads regarding racism, relationships and of course cosplay. I’m sure you can relate to some of the stories throughout the book and may even begin to think about certain situations in another light.

If you are interested in becoming featured at conventions, Talynnkel says the best method is to “keep your ear close to the ground”. See who’s running the events and get to know them. Also, of course, apply to the events using the application. Get to know individuals at small events because they may be connected to larger events that can help you get your foot in the door. Talynnkel actually states she was doing panels at Momocon before she was asked to be a guest. But, after consistently providing great panels for them; they eventually asked her to be a guest. They reached out to her and this came from constantly providing great content and networking with others.

Definitely make sure you record your work. It can serve as a reference for others asking about your panels. Cell phone images are great but eventually, you need to work with some amazing photographers and videographers to create images that accurately represent your work.  Experienced photographers have been doing this for a very long time and create some amazing work so go ahead and find one that creates images that match your style and personality.

Last but not least you need to research your conventions. Lots of times there are smaller events that are nearby and these events are a great way to get your foot in the door. Make sure they align with your goals and do not hesitate to reach out to the directors. Sure its not as large of a scene as Momocon or Dragoncon but we all have to start somewhere.

We talk about several other topics including body positivity and working with others along with interracial relationships. Its one of the best interviews I have had so definitely check it out. I would like to thank Talynnkel again for taking the time to speak with us. For more awesome cosplay interviews click HERE! Stay tuned for more podcasts coming every week.
