Welcome back everyone to another awesome interview with a cosplayer episode. If you missed the last episode, feel free to click HERE! As for today’s episode, we have an amazing cosplay for you so make sure you give the entire episode a listen. I actually met this cosplayer at BLERDCON but didn’t get to speak with her until much later. Her cosplays are very nontraditional as she crafts them all from yarn. That’s right, not EVA Foam, not Worbla, but Yarn. Given that her style is very unique I’m sure you know who I’m speaking of! If not, help me give a warm welcome to Yarn Goddess Cosplay.
She is a cosplayer based out of Atlanta Georgia. She started cosplaying in 2014. Her intro to cosplay came with one of the largest cosplay conventions on the east coast. That’s right good old Dragoncon. Her first few times at this convention she actually did not cosplay. But, when she finally did, she decided to cosplay as Yoruichi Shihouin from Bleach. After this cosplay debut, she was hooked. She then crafted Erza Scarlet from fairy tail and as we can see, it’s grown so much from there.
So if your anything like me, then you do not know the difference between knitting and crocheting. Usually outfits constructed from EVA Foam go on to take the prize. So @Yarn Goddess Cosplay usually avoids cosplay contests. But, at BLERDCON, her outfit when on to impress not only me but the judges as well. To be honest, I don’t really understand how crocheting works, but she explains the process and her thought patterns throughout the costume creation process so make sure you listen to the entire episode.
Next, we went into some of the cosplays she has made. We started off with Poison Ivy. @Yarn Goddess Cosplay was inspired by Poison Ivy because although the character was sexy, she was essentially sexy with a purpose. Basically her beauty was deadly. The wig for this character was also similar to Ariel from the little mermaid. Reusing items for multiple cosplays helps cut down on costs. She states that this outfit was extremely difficult to make but plans to remake it are in the works. She wants to crochet individual flowers for this costume which will take an extremely long time. But hey no pain no gain.
So after viewing all of these amazing pieces of art its only natural to wonder what materials and tools she uses to get the job done. Well no worries my friend, we touched on this also. She prefers H 5.5mm Hooks. She loves this hook because it allows her to time herself. We all know how important time management is in the cosplay world, especially with convention season right around the corner. In terms of yarn, its similar to fabric where you have to decide upon the quality length and color in proportion to the price you want to pay. Oddly enough, her favorite yarn is by great value. It costs approximately $2 for 397 yards or 7 ounces of yarn.
Another great yarn type is alpaca yarn. It’s about $10 for 5 ounces. With 5 ounces, you could probably make around a 4inch by 4inch pillow. In general, she looks for the softest type of yarn and fluctuates between several brands with another being pound of love. Since each one has pros and cons she decides on the type before the project begins and of course makes sure the brand has the right color.
There is so much more to this episode so trust me you will want to listen to the entire thing. Especially if you want to learn more about creating cosplay from yarn. I would like to thank @Yarn Goddess Cosplay again for taking the time to speak with us. For more cosplay interviews feel free to click HERE! That’s going to do it for today. Stay tuned for another interview with a cosplayer episode next week. Looking forward to seeing everyone at Katsucon and getting lots of great pictures. Until next time, stay BOUNDLESS!!!
