How’s everyone doing, we have another awesome interview episode for the podcast featuring Quirklesscosplay. She is an awesome cosplayer based out of Atlanta and has made some extremely detailed and phenomenal cosplays. Definitely, head over to her Instagram to check them out. One of her most amazing cosplays is a Fel Warden from World of warcraft. The Fel Wardens are a lesser-known set of characters in the wow universe so definitely read up on them!
Side note also check out PixelmothApparel for some really cool shirts. I especially love the Karl from Aqua Teen Hunger force dressed as Nappa shirt and will certainly be picking one of them up! Anyways back to the interview. Quirklesscosplay took some time to speak with us about Eva Foam And armor building. Her very first armor build was Guts from berserk along with a Night Elf Hunter and Cordana Felsong. She’s also created an armor dragon from Zach Fischer illustration and will be bringing it to Dragoncon so definitely keep checking her work for its release.
So If your new to armor building we discuss what materials to use , where to get them from and why you should choose one material over another. Basically you have the choices of foam and thermoplastics. You can pick these items up from TNTCosplay or Hobby lobby and also check Michaels. She orders her wonderflex and worbla from the engineer guys which are an Atlanta based company. The difference in price for these items can very between $1.25 to $1.29 for each sheet of foam. But if you want a whole role of foam in different millimeters of thickness you should check TNTcosplay or Poly-Props. Listen to the interview for more info related to this topic.
To give you an idea about the difference between these materials, check her Instagram for more images. The Guts armor was made completely from thermoplastics and is extremely sturdy. Her newest armor Cordona Felson is made completely from EVA foam. So check these two images to view what you can expect from your completed projects. She states the foam armor is much more comfortable to wear and is extremely light. Her Guts armor is very hard and heavy but it will stand up to a lot more abuse and travel. Another large consideration are errors.
If you mess up with eva foam its not as expensive as mess-ups with worbla. So if your new to armor building, you may want to check out Eva Foam first as its more forgiving and not as expensive when experimenting. Also, we touch a bit on 3d-printing. 3d-printing allows you to create some amazing details in your cosplay but the learning curve may be rather steep. Figuring out the intricacies of the program used to create the cosplays can take a while but once you fully understand it 3d-printing is an awesome tool to compliment your armor building.
Last but not least your going to want to look into patterning and panting with Flexi Paint. Patterning is where you take measurements of yourself and then place them onto your material. You can do this by using saran wrap and masking tape. Wrap your body in saran wrap then with Duct Tape or masking tape. This will give you the exact measurements of your body. It is arguably more accurate than using a tape measure. You now have the exact size of whatever body part you are measuring. The podcast goes in a lot more detail than this paragraph so once again CHECK IT OUT!!!
I really enjoyed speaking with Quirklesscosplay and cant wait to meet up with her at Dragoncon. The new armor she will be debuting im sure will be awesome so stay tuned for some pics.
