Throwback Cosplay Ideas

Most of us are feeling cooped up and missing the good old days where we could interact with others and express our love for anime at conventions. So many conventions have already been canceled and I have no idea if the remaining few will stand. Similarly, lots of shows are being pushed back as a result of the pandemic meaning its time to hit my favorite category, the classics. That’s right its time for another throwback cosplay idea post. Sure you will not be able to model these timeless classics the way they were meant to be but when all of is this ends you will certainly be ready to go. I decided to go ahead and combine all of the items you will need to purchase into one gallery hopefully making the selection process much easier.

Wilma Flintstone

First up we have a cartoon network and boomerang classic. Wilma Flintstone was the wife of Fred Flintstone and mother to Pebbles. Her best friend was Bety Rubble as the two were always getting into trouble. Shockingly, Wilma was far ahead of her time. She was a strong female lead that was known for bailing Fred out of his crazy schemes. It would seem not much has changed since these times as I know tons of women who constantly bail their husbands out of ideas that seemed great at the time but ended tragically.

ED

“Welcome to Good Burger Home of the Good Burger can I take your order” is still one of the most recognized quotes from any movie. ED is also cosplayed at tons of conventions that unfortunately are not happening right now. This is another one of those cosplays that simply brings joy to the cosplayer and viewer. It’s not fancy or complex, it simply is what it is. Now if you want to step up your cosplay game go ahead and get another cosplayer to do a Mondo Burger cosplay and chase each other through the convention.

Princess Fiona

For some reason, people sleep on Shrek. Well, my friend, there was a reason 3 of them were made and the series netted over 1 billion worldwide. Everything from the singing to the storyline was simply outstanding. Not to mention there were tons of adult humor jokes that went over my head until I recently re-watched the movies. Fiona never gets the representation and respect she deserves like those Disney princesses. So the next time you think of cosplaying as Elsa or Tianaremember the true OG’s that paved the way.

Scott Pilgrim

This was definitely a weird movie and I’m sure it made sense if you read the comics but for the rest of us we can simply appreciate its aesthetic value.  Many only see the action side of this movie but true cosplayers know this was a romance. Scott Pilgrim was just trying to find his true love like many of us. Sure he went about it in a very strange unorthodox manner, but you got the point. And hey thinks worked out in the end right? Well for some of the people, not for everyone.

Faye Valentine

I don’t know why I love cowboy bebop so much but I just do. Seeing Spike and Faye cosplayed together always brings me back to the old days of adult swim. Long before anime was mainstream and Crunchyroll was a thing. When you simply had to stay up late or find episodes on Napster or Bearshare. Yea this quarantine definitely gets you thinking and forces you to realize you never know good times until after there gone.

Kick Ass

Definitely one of the easiest cosplays on the list, Kick Ass  was the hero we all needed. He didn’t have super powers or tons of money. He simply wanted to make a difference and do what was right. Now take all of this with a grain of salt as he surely would have been dead if it were not for Hit-Girl. Regardless of constantly getting his ass kicked, he chose to make a difference despite the apparent risks to his personal health. When you put on this costume you are carrying the dreams of Toronto on your back.

Penny Proud

Thought you had seen the last of Penny Proud. Whelp, you would have guessed wrong my friend as the series is set to make a comeback. I’m not exactly sure when the reboot will occur but I’m sure tons are not only welcoming it but gearing up for some proud family cosplays. I normally don’t like it when they remake old series but I’m willing to give it a chance. Usually, we put extremely high expectations on the series and expect it to be just like the original. Maybe because we have such fond memories of this show from childhood or maybe just because we don’t want to see a classic destroyed.

Susie Carmichael

You know I had to end it with some good old fashion Rugrats cosplay. Actually, I think this one is on the forefront of my mind because I was recently watching episodes from the show. I also would rather see this cosplay instead of an adult walking around in a diaper as Tommy Pickles. Ill have to pass on that cosplay unfortunately. I loved her character as she basically acted as the karma balancer. She helped the babies stand up to AngelicaKnow one likes a bully.

I hope you enjoyed this Throwback Cosplay post as I know I did. There are so many great characters on the list that represent the early days of all things nerd and cosplay.
